Neste, Suntory, ENEOS, and Mitsubishi plan to collaborate in the production of bio based PET bottles, and Suntory will begin using this resin to manufacture bottles in 2024.
Neste, Mitsubishi, Suntory, and ENEOS are already collaborating to develop a biomass based PET bottle supply chain using a mass balance method.
ENEOS is Neste's new partner in Japan and will use Neste RE's bio based intermediate, a ready-made solution that claims to be entirely made from raw materials, waste, and residues such as edible oil, to produce bio PX in Japan.
This bio PX will be converted into pure terephthalic acid (PTA) and ultimately made into PET resin. Suntory plans to use this resin to manufacture PET bottles, using a mass balance method to use bio based materials for PET bottle manufacturing. Mitsubishi Corporation will coordinate cooperation between value chains.
In addition, Neste plans to recycle 150000 tons of liquid waste plastic annually and convert it into petrochemical raw materials. It has now invested $111 million to upgrade its refinery located in Bohr Bay.
