Nest Collaborates With Japanese Companies To Produce Bio Based PET Bottles

Recently, Finland's Nest announced that the company has reached cooperation agreements with Japanese refining companies such as Yinnengshi and Mitsubishi to carry out the commercial production of bio based polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin beverage bottles.

It is reported that the raw material for bio based PET bottles is Neste RE from Neste, which is completely made of biological materials such as waste and residue, and can replace fossil materials in the value chain of beverage bottles. Japanese beverage company Suntory will produce packaging bottles for its products using renewable PET resin in 2024. Yinneng Shi will use Neste RE based biological intermediates to produce bio para xylene (PX) at its Mizushima Refinery in Japan, and then produce purified terephthalic acid (PTA) from the bio PX, followed by PET resin for use by Suntory in the production of PET bottles. Mitsubishi will coordinate cooperation between value chain partners.

Nest stated that the company will use a mass balance method to allocate bio based materials to PET bottles. Lilyana Budyanto, Asia Pacific Regional Director of the Sustainable Partnership for Nexter's Renewable Polymers and Chemicals Division, said, "Through collaboration on the value chain, Nexter will reduce the dependence of the polymer and chemicals industry on fossil resources and contribute to the production of lower carbon footprint products.
