100% Bio Based! Multi Layer PET/PEF Bottles Can Enter The PET Bottle Recycling Flow

Avantium N.V., a leading technology company in the field of renewable chemistry, announced that the European PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle platform (EPBP) has granted Avantium temporary approval to recycle multi-layer PET/PEF (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging in the European bottle recycling market for a period of three years.

PEF is a 100% bio based, recyclable polymer with extensive applications in single-layer and multi-layer bottles, food and beverage packaging, and textiles. PEF has excellent barrier properties for oxygen and carbon dioxide, making it suitable as a barrier material for multi-layer PET bottles and further improving their recyclability.

The third-party evaluation results show that at a market penetration rate of 5%, PET/PEF multilayer bottles containing 10% PEF have no negative impact on the haze and other performance of the produced rPET products. Therefore, EPBP granted temporary approval for Avantium's PEF resin under the following conditions:

• The maximum allowed market penetration rate is 5%
• PEF content in a single bottle does not exceed 10%

Resilux, an international hard plastic packaging supplier, signed a conditional purchase agreement for PEF with Avantium in 2021. Dirk De Cuyper, its CEO, stated, "The recognition of EPBP is an important milestone for PEF entering the market, demonstrating the potential of incorporating PEF performance into PET product design."

Avantium is expected to complete the construction of the world's first commercial FDCA (2,5-furandicarboxylic acid) factory by the end of 2023, and achieve the commercial launch of PEF by 2024. The temporary approval of EPBP will continue until June 30, 2025, during which Avantium can obtain large-scale data from the recycling market. EPBP will decide whether the temporary approval can be converted to formal approval based on the data.
